A guide to hiking the Margalla Hills: the popular numbered trails, difficulty and timings, the best seasons, wildlife and the safety rules to follow.

Few capitals have a national park at the end of the street. In Islamabad, the forested ridges of the Margalla Hills National Park rise directly behind the E and F sectors, and a network of numbered trails starts minutes from people’s homes. Here’s how to choose a trail and hike it safely. Trail conditions and access rules change, so check local notices before you go.
| Trail | Starts near | Difficulty | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trail 3 | Margalla Road, F-6 | Moderate to hard | Steep climb to a viewpoint, then on towards Pir Sohawa |
| Trail 5 | Margalla Road, F-7 | Easy to moderate | Gentler, shaded path along a stream; links with Trail 3 |
| Trail 6 | Near Faisal Mosque | Easy to moderate | Shady forest walk, popular with families |
| Other trails | Various points along Margalla Road | Varies | Quieter routes, including Trails 1, 2 and 4 |
Timings vary with fitness and crowds. Many hikers reach Trail 3’s first viewpoint in under an hour; continuing towards Pir Sohawa takes several hours up and back.
Trail 3 is Islamabad’s most famous hike: a steep, rocky, often crowded climb with benches and viewpoints looking over the city’s grid. Early mornings bring runners, families and serious hikers alike. It’s a real workout, so pace yourself, especially in heat.
Trail 5 follows a stream through the forest, with a gentler gradient and more shade. It’s a good choice for beginners, children and hot days, and it connects with Trail 3 if you want to push on.
Starting close to Faisal Mosque, Trail 6 is a leafy, relatively easy walk. Combine it with a visit to the mosque for a half-day outing.
In an emergency, call 15 for police or 1122 for rescue services.
After a morning hike, head for brunch or chai in the nearby markets of F-6 and F-7; see our guide to cafés in F-6 and F-7. For more ideas, read our list of things to do in Islamabad.
